Read A Story

About Read A Story

Why Was Read A Story Formed?

Read A Story was formed because the founder believes that every child should have books at home.  She felt that it was important for children to have someone read to them and also for young ones to have books at home.  She felt that reading to a child and having books available was of importance in a child's early years, in order to establish the foundation of literacy.

Read A Story's goal is to encourage literacy by:

  • Reading books and giving out picture books at preschools and kindergarten classes.  Read A Story continues to visit preschools and kindergarten classes in 2010.
  • Providing free books to preschool and kindergarten teachers to read and distribute to their students.
  • Reading stories and giving free books at community events.  Read A Story gave away over 500 picture books at the El Sobrante Stroll (due to a grant from First 5 Contra Costa Children and Families Commission on Sept. 21, 2008 and again in Sept. 2009).
  • Visiting young children at hospital (under development at this time)
  • Reading stories and giving books at public libraries (pending).
  • Encouraging parents and caretakers to read to their children at home.  - link
  • Training volunteers and encouraging retired teachers to visit preschools and kindergarten classes.
  • Making school visits fun by inviting "interesting" readers from the community to read to the preschoolers and children in kindergarten.
