Welcome to Read A Story!
Providing stories and books for children
This 501(c)(3) organization was founded to promote literacy in young children, especially children between the ages of 2 through 8, who might not have books at home. Read A Story believes that reading to a child and giving the book to take home encourages future reading and a love of books.

In 2010, Read A Story volunteers visited more than 30 classrooms (preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade classes) in Richmond, San Pablo, El Sobrante, Pinole, San Francisco, South San Francisco, and Sacramento. Read A Story gave away more than 1,000 picture books in 2010, with the goal of promoting literacy and providing picture books to young children. Often, Read A Story would make multiple visits to the same classroom in an effort to encourage children to read and also to give more books to the children. Books at home at an early age can be a good foundation for success in school and in life. Other 2010 volunteer services included a Literacy Night for preschool parents and Story Time at the Bay Area Rescue Mission.
Read A Story hopes to expand our services in 2011, by visiting more schools and community events. We hope to receive the funds to visit new classrooms in the Bay Area and Sacramento region.

A young boy looks at a picture book that was previously read by a Read A Story volunteer. Since he is familiar with the story, he can look at it by himself or share the book with his family.
